The Makes The Bad
So recently I have noticed that a lot of anime which I really enjoy suffer from the a double-edged sword. What I mean is that the very elements that can make them good and fun to watch can also ruin them in the same way. I mean there is the whole discrimination thing against the cursed children. Good in the sense that it paints a vivid picture at how cruel discrimination is. Then it is bad in the sense that the main character is so incredibly full of how horrible discrimination is that he takes it upon himself to be a great advocate. Now this is might actually be a good story point... except for the fact that the main character has ties to all the most powerful people in his territory at the time. I mean they have the leader of the territory sitting around waiting for him to wipe it out and ask for a hand job. Then there is a very wealthy family which took him in and raised him. So it kind of makes his whole plea for equality more an act of tyranny than an act of... not tyranny... sorry I do not feel like thinking up of words. I mean yeah the family and him are kind of estranged, but the ruler and him are not. When you have the dictator, that is what she is, of the region in the lie of hot chicks wondering when the cock is going to pop out, you can easily scare people. Well all except the very poorly made human villains.
Why did it have to have human villains? I mean really.. this anime was standing just fine on the humans vs alien things that we might have created but no one is sure if we did or not. No we have to include political power struggles with some of the crappiest villains around. Lets take Seitenshi#39;s body guard... uhhh what was his name? I do not know, but he had all the depth and cunning of one of those crappy villains in TV shows I watched as a kid. All because he felt that he was more worthy of being the number one body guard. His attempts to kill or intimidate Rentaruo are hilarious at best. I mean Rentaruo is a guy who fights super human bug things that can convert you into one of them with one bite. The body guard things that a group of his buddies will be enough to scare someone like that. Then there is Osaka ruler... uhh yeah I think that was his territory. Anyway Osaka ruler is typical old sociopath business man. You know almost 50, fat, beard. It is like they took him out of a villains 099 class. Not much else to be said about him... he shows up says some things that are... well true.. and vanishes. Then there is mystery villain number 3. The next villain shown at the end of the end of the series. That was kind of a surprise.. however... in many ways she made Rentaruo look like a loser since... well unlike Rentaruo, this villain had conviction. AS you can see this anime is all over the place at times.
Another one of the good and bad points. Having lots of branches and story points to work off of is a good thing. However, when you take time to give all the crazy weird anime fans lots of fan fiction horrid things... it is a bad thing. For instance, there was that whole thing with his school. You know they are on the verge of being wiped out and yet they are playing school in the middle of a destroyed city. Lucky for us the author realized how this ruins the seriousness of the series. So the author made sure to snap us back down into reality. Which happened all to often.
At times it feels like this anime was going to be a slice of life anime. You know instead of a dystopian future anime where we follow one of the guardians of the city. So we constantly have this jumping back and forth between the serious dangerous work and the comedy stylings of people who are going to school. Then to counter that fact the author just made sure to have a snap transition back into the more serious dangerous story. Which just kind of gets annoying. No offense but you do not write a story about the last bastions of civilization and how we survive it and make it slice of life unless humanity no longer has to face a threat.
So all in all, a lot of elements in this anime do just as much good as harm. Whether it be the weak characters, or the jumping around between moods, this anime collapses in on itself more than I really care to actually think about. Still it is not like the anime is completely ruined... you know unless you are biased by me.. then we have a problem right?
