It Is A Cultural Thing
This anime kind of sucks because of the fact that it plays heavy on culture. That is where this anime can be really bad for all of us. After all, I only really knew that parts of this anime were supposed to be funny... however, that does not mean I understand why they are funny. Plus the sister was a crazy osakan character. That is like a crazy redneck character here in the states. You have tons of things you can do.
That is another thing that really kind of annoyed me about this series. It felt like the Namika was just supposed to fit into every kind of crazy Osakan out there. She was not just supposed to be one main type of crazy Osakan. So it felt at times like her character and preferences changed based on what the situation was and how the show as going to make fun of Osakans today. I mean the writers did a very good job of hiding it by making sure that some of the assumed facts about Osakans held true. Namika would always be screaming and loud, she would always say weird things, and they broke the anime up with her catch phrase. Even still the main difficulty was the cultural barrier.
This is just something that I will not get. Such is life, culture is something you have to live in and be a part of for a while for you to even begin to understand it. So it is not surprise, that I knew to laugh and not why I was laughing. After all, we all know which character is supposed to be the crazy different one. You know the one that dresses differently and is really loud and obnoxious. Then there is the one that has the accent.
I think that will hurt any American version of this anime. I know that the Kansai dialect is something like an accent here in America, but it is always hard to make that kind of a change into another culture. After all, is it really a new accent or just another vocabulary. At the end of the day, it is one of those things that can be hard to pick up. So I think that is more of a bad for if this one even makes it to the states. Which I doubt it will, it does not have the same crazy factor that some other short animes do. Plus it is really hard to tell whey Namika is different.
That is one point that I do not really see. I guess she dresses differently and talks differently. However, I am just not in on the whole Japanese fashion thing. One thing that is hard to see is how the small things in culture are different. I am sure that most Japanese would not get whey all of our various city shows are weird because we have so many different city cultures. Then again we rarely make a comedy about an internal culture without making the people we are making fun of really obnoxious.
So yeah, this anime struggles a lot because it is an anime about... well nothing that I would really understand. It is an anime that has all those deep down cultural things. Things you actually have to be a part of the culture to understand or appreciate. That is how it really sucks. You cannot really understand anything that is going on. So I felt like kind of an idiot laughing this time around because of the fact that I had no real idea what was doing on.
