New Game Plus but Not
This is a concept you see from time to time when it comes to video games. There is a new game plus mode. However, it is only a kind of new game plus. True, some stuff carries over from your last playthrough. However, all the important stuff, levels, gear, and/or skills get wiped because there needs to be some challenge. Then again, it is not wiped at the same time. Kind of like you know where all the stuff is, so you can go straight there. You might even know how to get high-level stuff because you were crafty. That describes how this anime works.
Mattius is the sage, and when it is convenient, he has all the power in the world and cannot be stopped. When it is not convenient, he has no power and is too weak. There is a lot of swinging between those two states. Sometimes he needs to be able to take out a demon without any trouble. Then he needs to have trouble. He still has access to all his knowledge. Which allows him to do a lot of stuff. Almost as if there is no requirement to learn anything or set the foundation.
Having Mattius always have the power and/or the knowledge kind of ruins the series. When there is a lack of power or a situation where standard tricks will not work, Mattius can just pull out a plan from his vast experience. In many ways, he is kind of like some kind of god. He has all the knowledge to literally do whatever he wants. Then he also is a mortal with nothing. This sort of swings back and forth. That is the balancing act that needs to be played since the rest of the characters just power-level around him.
Here is a bit of instruction from time to time with these guys, but ultimately all of them just kind of grow from being around Mattius. I get that there is the time between each section of the story, but not that much time. Especially considering how impatient Mattius is. He always makes it a point to go as fast as he can, which he always does. So really, no more than a week passes unless explicitly mentioned in the show. I guess that is constant, which is better than the on-again, off-again love crap.
This extra element baffles me as well. Mattius is a magician who dedicated his all to being a great magician. However, suddenly he decides he is going to date or something similar? The on and off romance almost feels forced at times. You have to ensure that we know that Lurie and Mattius have crushes on each other. I guess it was a good time filler at a minimum. I mean, not many people do stuff like that. Still, we need that stuff to stop. Has more awkwardness sprinkled in throughout the series? Do not have all the action and planning, then a quick reminder that these two want to kiss.
Overall the series feels like it is rushed. Maybe the manga is that way, but I find that hard to believe, given how they manage to cram three different arcs into the 12 episodes they have for this series. Still, I guess when you do not know if an anime will pan out, one needs to make sure that there is enough of the show to keep people interested. I doubt the author would have been able to hold interest if there were only two arcs. Still, I guess the lack of balance and the cramming can make this series really boring at the end of the day.
