Too Short For So Many People
So then, now comes one of my challenges coming up with reasons to not watch an anime that I overall enjoyed. I guess the main problem that I had with this anime is the fact that all the characters are suffering from the new comedy trend of just having one joke about them. Well maybe it was two jokes in the case of some characters, but for the most part there is the one joke that every character seems to have for themselves. Plus they also try and shoe horn something that resembles a story or something like it into the anime itself.
This is a sitcom anime, while I do not mind little bits and pieces of story or development, the fact that they tried to build this annoying and elaborate plot around poor Lucy just kind of gets annoying. She is clearly the center of attention, but at the same time the anime jumps around and makes you feel kind of uncomfortable as we jump between Chihiaya and Ichimaya and their little love story. I just hate it when the author tries to shoe horn in something extra when you cannot think of anything else to do with the main character.
I guess this is an anime where the characters are all supposed to get some kind of equal show, but still that is not what I really want to see. The focus of the anime is either Lucy or Chihiaya. Then they like to squeeze in a few extra results like Hasabe and Miyoishi. It just breaks everything up into an unusual sequence of events. Everyone gets some kind of main star treatment. However at the end of the day most of the treatments are just one shot attempts at making certain things more popular. This series is too short to do what the author was trying to do.
I understand what the author was trying to do with this series, but when you only have thirteen episodes you kind of screw yourself over and are going to end up cutting out a lot of stuff. Which is why Lucy and Chihiaya/Ichimaya were the highlights of the show. I guess there were just too many characters in this anime. Well something like that, it is hard to say for sure, but the anime itself could have used many less characters. Instead of just writing one joke into a lot of characters they should have written several jokes into a few characters.
I guess that is the main thing that kills me as well. The fact that there are so many characters, but none of them are more than a one gag character. Whether it is the bitchy Tsundere or the Clueless girl or the otaku, every one of the characters had their one joke and that was that. It makes an anime hard to watch when all you have is one joke for everyone. I am all for an easy quick to watch anime, but you do not need to make the anime so one-dimensional that it becomes easy to predict. I guess that is what happens when you write up a whole unique cast of characters for an anime, but you never really get around to figuring out more than what they look like.
So yeah, no anime is without flaws that is for sure. When you have characters who are nothing but one joke. The anime becomes way to easy to predict. When you want to have a lot of side stories, you need to have more episodes. At the end of the day nothing is wrong with slightly complex characters. Maybe you need to combine three people into a really awesome character. However, I guess if you have more than thirteen episodes you can pull stuff off. I guess what ruins this anime the most if the fact that the anime does not have enough episodes for what it could be. Which is such a shame, so much wasted potential.
