New Power Rangers Movie
So I was shocked that a Netflix-exclusive Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie is coming. Much to my shock, they also managed to get a lot of the original cast. It is set in a Power Rangers universe and centers around the very first Rangers. So, if you want my quick opinion on this movie, it was like watching the Power Rangers. If I were back to being a kid, I would have really enjoyed it, but it was not bad. It was what you would expect for a movie trying to recapture that audience. Which means it needed a little shine.
For starters, time has not really been that kind to many of the Rangers. I mean, yes, it has been 30 years and whatnot, but it was a pretty hard sell when all of the rangers had to stop using their morphers and fight the putties. That is just the reality of things. You know, I get it. Age and time, not as great acting careers, and all of that stuff can play a big role in this, but it needed to be more convincing.
Another thing that I might nitpick is how ALL the rangers are supposed to be present in the movie, yet there were no other rangers. It would be too hard to pull off another Kaizokurenger situation where you can get a bunch of guest stars to come in. It would have been nice to have at least one or two other rangers from a different team show up. However, there is not much I can do about that other than to mention it would have made more sense.
However, I did enjoy the defeated putty change. In the past, the putties would just be the crap kicked out of them, then get up and run away. Now, they actually do some destruction sequence, and they disappear after they are defeated. This was a nice change, especially in some scenes; I will avoid spoilers. Another nice change was the involvment of Rita.
It is not uncommon for the big bad to get involved in the fighting from time to time. So that is something new that we got with this movie. Rita came down and kicked some ass which was fun to watch. Normally, the big bad, at this point in the story, would not be so much more powerful than the main characters, but it was something to add a little flavor and fill up a few more scenes.
All in all, it was Power Rangers. I can watch the old series, and I do not feel anything particularly remarkable about them, but they are fun to watch and a good thing to remember. I am not going to mention the lame Yellow Ranger arc in this movie. It is there, and it is a part of the story. After all, we needed the yellow ranger for the Megazord fight. However, it was not something that I think is worth mentioning. Yes, it is Power Rangers, and if you can sit down and watch a Power Rangers series and enjoy it, you will likely enjoy this movie. So I recommend watching it because Power Rangers are always a good way to spend a little time.
