The end of the MCU
So I was one of those many who went out and stayed up late risking my well-being at work to see the new Avengers: Endgame. So I figured I would be proactive and not wait a couple of days before I get the review out so I am getting it out as fast as I can. So as the title suggests this movie is the end of the MCU. Well more or less the golden age of the MCU to be precise. I know that Marvel is going to attempt to milk this for all it is worth until it becomes the failure that Star Wars is, but in the meantime, I can take solace in knowing that I will likely not get as hyped up to see many more MCU movies after SpiderMan. However, that is my personal opinion, and now I am sure you want to hear about the film itself.
Well let me start by saying I am going to avoid spoilers to the best of my abilities, but that may be hard as it is hard to review something as significant as this movie. However, good news on that point, unlike Return of the King this three hours flew by. I did not have any complaints. I even went out of my way to prevent the need to urinate during the movie, and it was so worth the mild dehydration I suffered. The movie moves along at an excellent pace. While there are parts and places where the film is a bit slow it is slow in the sense that you feel like you are going slow if you were driving 100 MPH and are now driving 60 MPH. You are still moving pretty fast even if the movie is slightly different from the traditional MCU movies.
This movie took a lot from all of its movies. You can see pieces and parts from every single MCU movie that there is out there. It is a nice mashup of all of the stuff from the previous films. So it is fun to watch and an excellent new experience. It feels like they have that whole balance between being serious and being obnoxious that is hard to obtain in the movie, but I guess when you are going to be doing a project like Endgame you do your best to make sure that the movie is fantastic.
Speaking of awesome, I am trying to think of characters that I did not see from previous movies. The heroes, of course, I believe that Marvel did a great job at getting every single hero from every single other film some amount of screen time in some form or fashion. This is hard when you look at the extensive cast. I guess that is why this movie might be so obnoxiously long. You have to make sure that everyone gets a bit of a show. I mean this movie is really like a farewell party to the whole thing.
That being said, it does have a few weak points. The first weak point being the overall pointless nature of Captian Marvel. She appears and then disappears and then appears again. To be honest she contributes almost nothing to the movie aside from just being a plot device. I guess that she has been selected to replace Ironman in the coming phase two. So I think it would be weird to have her appear. Then again, they do not have to mention any of the old earth heroes as they are all going away.
My other gripe has to do with the stuff that happens in the story. I get that a lot of those parts were supposed to be character building moments where people uhhh overcome something, but so many of them are just... well pointless. I mean you have already affirmed to do that thing that was done to make things work out, see avoiding spoilers, do you need whatever it was that was given to the characters in the story. I mean a lot of stuff could have been cut out if they did not need to add these extra steps along the path.
However, it is a great movie, sadly it suffers from being over-hyped, but that is expected with how well Infinity War is made. I say see it and say good by to the MCU golden age. See it twice, I know that it will go to funding the more boring later phases, but maybe they will get some good actors and write some good movies. Who knows, it is possible, anyway I hope that this can convince people to see the film again. Let's face facts if you are reading this you lose you your geek card if you have not seen it by now.
