The Wii U is Actually Awesome
So I was one of those crazy people out there who ran out and bought a Wii U as soon as it came out. Yup I am one of those weirdos. I have also been reading my fair share of industry news about the Wii U. Needless to say it is nothing but a bunch of would be gamers bitching about how the Wii U does not have the best graphics in the world. Topped with a bunch of would be gamers bitching about how it is Nintendo. Really those are the only arguments that stick out. Yeah there are a few about the hardware. However, I doubt Nintendo had any plans to release the Wii U When they did. It was just a bunch of lazy so-called "Insiders" spreading rumors. I won't say the Wii U is without flaws. However, it is not anywhere near as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
So lets talk about the hardware. The main focus of peoples' hate on the Wii U is not so much the concept, but the hardware. One major gripe point is about the battery in the tablet. Yeah, my phone battery is much larger than that battery. However, it is not like it is hard to charge the tablet. Well not for me I bought a deluxe edition. So no threading the needle here. Yes it could have been bigger, judging by the battery chamber there will be big replacements out there for it. So I am not all that upset. That just means that I have to play video games for a shorter period of time.
Then there is the Processor. You know, I have to wonder about people for a second. I think that most of them forget that the Wii U tablet is not an actual tablet. I mean if you unplug your Wii U and power on the tablet nothing happens. I think, I do not know I have not tried it. You probably get an error message. Anyway, that is besides the point. Nintendo likely choose the processor to suit the needs they had. You know providing two separate gaming screens. Providing two very different control schemes, and giving a graphical upgrade. They are not pulling an XBox where they just found the fastest processor they could afford in bulk and put it in their gaming system. Nintendo actually takes time to figure out these things. They are no different that Sony in that sense. It is funny how people tend to forget that Nintendo has always made graphics secondary to gameplay.
Speaking of gameplay, lets talk about that thing that the PS3 no longer has and the Xbox 360 kind of has, backwards compatibility. Is it a little slow to get going, yes it is. However, does it work? Yes it does work just fine. You see Nintendo learned from the other gaming systems out there. They saw how Sony tried to put three systems in one system and failed miserably. They also saw how Sony tried to do extra upscaling and on the fly improvements and failed. Really Nintendo saw all the mistakes that both companies made and avoided them. Who would have thought that anyone would do something like that. You know avoiding mistakes. I mean holy shit that is a new concept right? It is the in thing to do to make all the same mistakes that everyone else has made in the past. So guess what you can play any Wii game on the Wii U. If I went out and bought a PS3... could I do that? What about an XBox 360, could I just pop in any one of my XBox games? So I have an entire game library at my disposal. Even better I do not have to go out and buy new controllers.
Here is another novel concept, why develop new controllers when you can just use the existing ones? Why make people pay to have multiplayer when you can just give it to them out of the box? I love this fact about the Wii U. I do not need to rush out and spend another $200 to $250 on controllers. I can use that money for games... or whatever. My point is that it all works out just fine in the end there. However, no one seems to believe that not trying something new is a bad thing. I mean hell if it works why rebuild it?
So all in all, the Wii U is MUCH better than everyone is making it out to be. It is actually a good system. Does it have problems, of course, what system does not have problems. However, the main problem is everyone forecasting doom about it. You know when you forecast doom about a system it becomes the systems main struggle. Developers stop producing games for fear of lost revenue. The developers who do produce games cut corners to insure revenue. The fact that there is such a crappy set of launch titles shows that Nintendo was rushed to get the system out. Well that is if you only look at the disc titles. There are some pretty cool downloadable ones. Those are never mentioned though... I wonder why. Anyway quit your bitching this system is awesome. Unlike my XBox 360 it won't collect dust.
