NDK 2012 Review
So I guess it is time to do a review. Sorry I tried to keep up with a daily review, but... yeah my brain stops working when [Hours of Sleep] > 10. So I will talk about NDK now. You know after a few days have passed and a good chunk of Saturday and most of Sunday are just a blur thanks to the consumption of Booze. So then lets start off with the almighty problem of NDK that I bitch about every time.
This convention is just too freaking crowded. Now mind you this is one of the very few conventions that occur in my location every year. So I am not going to let a small think like accidentally brushing against hot girls get in the way of me attending. HOWEVER, this con needs a bigger venue. This year the fan cap was actually reached. Which makes me happy, and sad. Happy because it means that now NDK is going to REALLY have to consider going to a new place. Sad because that means that now it is going to become even more painful to get in. I guess it is a good thing that I pre-registered already.
Next lets talk about the panels. I am very happy with the panels. They have walked away from the usual fan masturbation panels and actually had plenty of panels that were really good. The one I enjoyed a lot was the Lighting up my costume panel. That one was awesome, I have new inspiration for my cosplays this year. That is a good thing. Making them flash and have pretty colors is a good thing. I also enjoyed most of the industry panels that I could get too. I am glad that Funimation is being so active in the community. It really showed this year with their panels. I made sure to be an obsessive fan and attend the World Premier, or at least that is what the funimation person said, of C-Control. Which is an awesome anime. I am kind of pissed I did not watch it back when it was on fansubs. It is also fun just seeing all the anime that I cannot find on fansubs. I am glad that Funimation is trying to pull a Tokoypop. Anyway, other than that the panels were pretty cool. I was a bit annoyed by waiting in line. Then again, I guess that is the curse of the small venues right?
I will now review something pointless, like the best time of day to attend the con. Now for me, I feel the best time of day is to attend late at night. For many reasons, first off all the girls want to be sexy ravers. Second off since there is some kind of social event going on. Everyone wants to break the stereotype of the convention and actually be social. So the halls and rooms and panels and all that kind of stuff are nice and empty. The VGR is particularly nice when no one is around. Because then you do not have to worry about Tournament players stomping you and getting annoyed at you because you suck at the game. I really enjoyed having button mashing contests in Persona Arena or whatever it was called. That was a lot of fun. Playing games during the day sucks because all the tournament players are there and they stomp on you and get pissed at you for sucking. Did I mention that it is actually nice and open and cool in the hotel during this time? Yes it is nice and open and cool and all that stuff. So that makes the best time to be at the con between 23:00 and 05:00.
My only other gripe about this con was the staff. Not that I do not completely understand why they had to do what they did, but still it was kind of annoying constantly being yelled at to keep the hallways moving. I understand fire hazards and traffic jams and all that stuff. However, at times it got to the point of where I could not stand against walls for fear of being mistaken for being in a line or something. Plus always having to wait in line to get into the dealer's room was kind of annoying. Not that I did not like the limited people in there. However, the dealer's room is supposed to be an impulse place to go. If You have to stand in line that impulse goes away.
Overall this con is still a great con to go too. Not just because it is one of the few cons in the area. There are still plenty of panels to attend and lots to learn and see. Plus the joys of being a big con are good cosplay. Yeah there are still problems, nothing is perfect. However, when you are as easy-going as I am things like that do not tend to get you down. At least I do not think they got me down. Whether or not I was nourished might have had something to do with that though. However, as always it was a good con. Keep supporting this con people we do not want it to go away.
