Horror... I Just Do Not Get It
So I was just watching Another, and a few thing crossed my mind. The first one being I just do not understand horror settings these days. I have never really understood why so many anime horror settings seem to have two central themes. The first one being a kind of gothic setting. The second one being the ball jointed dolls setting. I have never understood why these two things seem to be present in anime horror.
I mean yeah I guess I can understand the ball jointed dolls. They are a bit on the creepy side. Even the people who love them are willing to admit that. I mean after all they are meant to mimic perfect humans. Oh well so I guess I can understand that the right placing of things can make any setting not scary. However, maybe I just do not get the symbolism. Like the dolls are some how containers for human souls.
The other side I have never understood is the goth side of things. Everyone with their big fancy black cloths. Yes they look neato... but... what exactly is the point? Yes there was a time when that kind of stuff could be considered scary. That was before the goth clique was in full swing. I do not know... maybe I am must missing something... who knows.
Then I look at American horror settings. They are pretty much the opposite of the Japanese ones. In many ways they are not scary at all. I mean at least with the Japanese ones they mess with your mind a bit. Though I do get some kind of gratification watching some crazy guy hack those pretty girls to death. Hmmm I wonder when fat chicks are never killed in American horror movies?
I mean when you see horror movies you see all the hottest most popular girls in school dying. I wonder if everyone is pissed off at those girls? I mean that would make sense... I guess... I do not know it is just kind of odd when you think about it. Maybe it is because we all know that no matter how sociopath or narcissistic those girl would have been. Everyone will throw them a big wake and talk about how it is such a waste. Yet with fat girls. We would not have anything to say... because they are fat.
Anyway, I really do not understand horror settings. I guess it just shows that I am culturally removed from horror or something. Oh well at least the Japanese know how to tell a ghost story.
