Too Much Screening
So, I have been job hunting. Well it is more like putting a big target on my back and saying shoot me. However, I digress... I decided to post a few notes on the whole process. Really the screening process is the most annoying part of it. So for most of these screens I get spammed by phone calls and emails. So the few that I do reply to loops into an HR interview.
This interview is the interview where the recruiter finds out more about you. Basically they spot check your resume and then ask you why you are tired of your current job. So that is about a 20 to thirty minute call. I have yet to encounter a recruiter who has not found me to be a worth while candidate. Really I am almost always told that my resume will get passed on. So the resume is passed on. Now sometimes I am screened here sometimes I am not. When I am not I get to set up a phone screen.
Basically a phone screen is a 30 to 60 minute interview with the person you are going to interview with later. This can be a variety of things. It can be a CS3 quiz. Those are my favourites. When I am asked questions that I was taught the principles of but have never actually used. You know because the language I am using handles that for me. Or really it is starting to feel like free consulting time. Where I get to tell them all about my hopes and dreams. Basically they are supposed to get a feel for me and decide if I am a worth while candidate. If I am not screened next comes the actual interview.
Now this is my favourite portion of the process. I have to stress that. Because this is the longest portion of the interview. You see these interviews can last anywhere from two to five hours. Where you talk to a bunch of people. Some of whom have nothing to do with your job. Some of whom have everything to do with your job. Some of whom are just pulled off their work and given a question sheet. Many many many things. This is the part where I usually fuck up in some way. Anyway, basically you sit there and if you are lucky you cannot tell they are asking you the same question until the interview is over. You get too meet lots and lots of people. Of course that is just for the instate interviews. The out of state interviews can add an extra day to your work and travels. Which is oh so fun. Because now I get the stress of travelling. Then after all of that. All the hope, and patience. They decide that they do not want me.
It is a wonder that companies have any money at all sometimes. I mean if you are paying out that much money to fly someone out and reject them. That cannot be good for business. It is just long and annoying. This kind of a thing would drive me crazy if I did not already have a job. Oh well, at least I have a job. So I can keep looking. Now onto resolving the issue of my $200 phone bill... which just means I need more minutes.
