Only Extremes
Thinking back on anime. It seems that most characters fall into the extremes. I guess I should say main characters. There are no normal main characters. They all fall into one of two categories, awesome or useless. Maybe this is just me but I am starting to get bored of such categories. You know why can't characters be... I don't know normal. Nothing too special or great. Then again, if that were the case all the NPCs would be worthless. Then again, what would one define as normal.
That becomes the challenge. Normal people are boring. After all, regular life is boring. All the normal, boring people turn to entertainment, like anime, to escape the normal boring life. I mean think about it. People who live not boring lives are too busy not watching TV or coming up with stupid stories to tell the bored people. I guess one just has to think about how one could make a character boring.
First off they have to fall into the middle of everything. If the character is too stupid, then it is the worthless extreme. If the character is too smart then they fall into the other extreme. Next they need to be average looking. Which... well kind of is hard to do so we will skip it. Next they have to break even on succeeding and failing. Not be constant fail or constant success. Or one grand failure or success every once in a while. However, we then run into the problem of character development.
Boring people really have no where to go. I mean, only extreme events or millions of tiny events build characters. In order to remain normal a character has to be on neither extreme and not really experience an extreme... well I guess an extreme on both ends could be good. I do not know.
I guess I am just saying that enough is enough and it is time for a change. Yes, anime continues to be more original than most other TV shows. However, it has hit that huge bubble point where people are just knocking off each other and having plenty of success. Which is worrisome, I guess that is the best time to strike right?
