Another Way To Ruin Video Games
You know I have to give the Red Cross... well something... I guess I can give them credit for making up the wonderful piece of garbage that Kotaku reported on. It is rather hilarious to anyone who is under the age of 50 and not senile. One has to wonder how bored people are to be able to come up with this crap. Virtual victims, I cannot help but laugh.
First off, as the article pointed out, the effect video games have on the human mind is inconclusive at best. There is nothing to prove that doing this stuff will turn us violent or won't. So while the red cross will say that video games create future war criminals. By "enforcing these rules" we won't be preventing them either. A subtle point that I know few have actually thought of. Lets face facts, in real life there is no magic shield.
In real life war crimes are committed everyday. Lets face facts, saying that you are violating the various treaties and conventions we have is not going to stop people from committing such acts. The only time when such acts are brought to light is when one side loses or seen as unjust. Lets talk about the fire bombings of Japan during WW2. The USA won WW2 so there were no real ramifications. Had we lost WW2, I am pretty sure there would be plenty of US political prisoners scattered across the globe. The fire bombings are just as bad as the Holocaust. However, the old saying is that history is written by the winners right?
Most developers will claim that this infringes on free speech. Hell I wish it was that nice. This is just a bunch of idiots lying to themselves. If it doesn't happen in video games then it won't happen in real life? Plus I can see plenty of loop holes. One such loop hole would be to have the civilians and non-combatants pick up guns out of fear. They posses a weapon therefore they are on the bad guys side. After all, let us program them with a hyper fear of me. They have been told I am a lying demon who will just rape them to death. So they believe they have to kill me. Simple, now I can get around the game because picking up a gun qualifies someone as a combatant. Same thing with structures. I create a game with a cult that is part of the invading force. My mission is to destroy their strongholds. Regardless of who is in them.
In the end this is a pretty hilarious case of old men trying to regulate the youth. In the end these things cause more trouble than they save. People killing people in video games has been around for a very long time. Which leads me to believe that this is a way for the red cross to plant future law suits. Think about it, if the Geneva convention condemns the actions taken in video games. Who is to stop the red cross from suing companies for putting that stuff in the games. I really hope that this falls through as people being bored. I know the US will adopt any policies right away. After all, the US sees no line between reality and fantasy.
