Have you ever had a feeling like you are not sure how to judge something? Well that is what this series gives me. It is hard to explain really, but I feel uneasy about this show in general. Between the lack of story and Jun's odd sexual obsession with Shinku. I am left feeling moderately angry. Especially with the lack of story.
What kind of person decides they are going to create the universe about fighting dolls. Then goes out of there way to do a bunch of character development? I know having full and rich characters is essential to any anime. However, you do not develop them for 10 of the 12 episodes in the series.
The series is about the Rozen Maidens and their quest to become the Alice. Yet for some reason they save all that interesting information, including the part about Alice till the very end. Who just throws the point of the dolls existence out there as an extra point? Really through out the entire series there is no sense of urgency to tell the story of the dolls. No instead there is a focus around Jun.
Who is Jun, well he is the main character. The series focuses on the fact that he is a Hikikomori. Until one day Shinku comes into his life. Since Jun has just started puberty he develops an infatuation with Shinku. He is not direct about it of course. But Shinku takes advantage of this to "Fix" Jun. Basically the story is about how the various Rozen Maidens in Jun's life make him realize that he can go outside. With a few random mock battles thrown in.
Really the crappy battles have difficulty making up for the crappiness of the story. I like the story about the dolls. Jun's uhhh problem would have been tolerable if the story did not focus around him. If they focused around his role in helping Shinku become Alice, that would have been tolerable. I mean for christ's sake if they are going to rip off Gash Bell why not do it completely?
