Not Too Many Troupes
So lets talk about this anime and why you should watch it, as much fun as it will be for me to babble on about it. Anyway, this anime overall is a very interesting concept and has a great idea and setting. So it is not really what I was expecting to be honest. It manages to keep the various obnoxious, cookie-cutter, tropes to a minimum which is dangerous in anime but definitely worth the risk in my book.
Speaking of non-traditional tropes we have a slightly non-traditional step sibling relationship. This was one of the main things that surprised me about this series is there was a good chunk of do not ask do not tell moment. Like with Eiji and his sister. Normally the step siblings are just that, step siblings, unless the anime is a hentai. This is the only time, I have seen, when the siblings played the role of the trope and did the hentai thing on the down low. I mean I guess when siblings do that they always try to keep it secret but this time around it is only pretty much spelled out once and then you kind of wonder about all their alone time. Which really puts an interesting light on Eiji
As much as I hate him and is bravado he does have a somewhat complex character. Stuck between his desire to just die because his sister will die, wanting to abuse his power to save the reshape the world and wanting to keep whats her face in line. That is a lot to balance out when you are a loser who cannot really see past his step sister. Which makes for some interesting development points and things that he did on own. At minimum you are not crushed by the "I am a good guy" routine that most heroes happen to live by.
I would be remiss is I did not mention the super powers. Japan has always had a very interesting idea of what super powers should be. While in the west super powers tend to be fairly basic and common. Japan goes out of its way to make the powers interesting. Like the guy who can make people not fight or the lady with a laser pet or all those kinds of things. Plus there was the added bonus, I think, that some people just managed to develop the powers on their own. I am talking of course about the Mikos. Who apparently had the power to summon gods and do all that jazz. That is not something that you normally see in an anime where people just randomly develop super powers.
The political dynamic is interesting too. You have Eiji who is going to be the king of the world and you have the rest of Japan and the UN. It is kind of strange how often extreme measures were taken to kill off Eiji. I mean yeah whats her face starts off innocently enough with the sword torture, BUT we get into using nukes and having people just be willing to be nuked and all that jazz. It was kind of funny how many people were willing to do amoral things, in public. Normally the amoral corrupt people are all behind the scenes and stuff. So it was interesting how things worked out.
Then there was the last major surprise, his sister. Normally when you have the "I just want to be with the family kind of characters", they are pretty bland and empty and just sort of bounce around. Not this one, nope she was actually far more evil and manipulative than some of the people who were trying to take over the world. You do not really see that very often. The sweet innocent one starts talking about how to do things, and black mailing people and stuff like that. It is rather funny to watch at times. You just do not expect it and it helps get past some of the more cringy parts with Eiji.
So for a short series it is not all that bad. You get the unique plot and all the special flavors that come with it. So it is not like this is not completely worthy of being ignored. This is a great example of how to do an anime right. which is not something that happens too often when you are not doing the "Stick to the pattern" kind of writing that most anime is pretty good at. So why not check it out?
