Well Rounded and Well Balanced
Here we go another near human extinction that humans managed to barely and accidentally survive. The good part about this anime is it shows a lot of development and is not afraid to go places at times. There are a lot of different angles and stories that are swirling around in this anime. Yet surprisingly the anime itself manages to hold itself together. That is probably because most of the side stories have small moments of glory.
Let's take the whole thing wish Seitenshi's uhhh royal guard or whatever.. you know what is his name. He has a vendetta against Rentaruo. However, instead of taking random episodes to focus on that guy. They focus on the points where the paths cross. There was only one random.. I guess outtake that kind of stuck out at the end. Even so it was more like they were showing off a minor detail. A lot of other anime would take time out of the few episodes trying to explain whatever obsession or vendetta was brought on to the minor character. Sometimes the very brief extra stories are helpful, other times they are not. Even the side-stories for main characters manage to set up new plot points and potential arcs.
Take the Kisara's who vendetta against her family. Really it is only mentioned in passing, but when it comes time for her story to come to light it does so very gracefully. I dare say there was an excellent use of foreshadowing in the episodes leading up to it. Her initial end game was even better because most anime would play that off as "Friendship concurs all". You know there would be some kind of Love-love scene with her and Rentaro as he saves her from the darkness. Now.. I guess that might still happen. However, I do not think so given this anime and the way it likes to go places that you do not normally go.
I am talking about the treatment of the cursed children throughout the series. The cursed children are not really treated as people. There are several messed up events on different occasions. Showing that people can just be freaking crazy mean when it comes to stuff like this. Do not get me wrong it is kind of sad because of the fact that they had no control over their circumstances, but you know that is how things work out I guess. I guess you could say this anime does a good job of diving into a failing system.
I guess you could say that human resilience and stuff like that is not always a good thing. I mean, really humans may have a lot of comforts in this anime, that they would not have in other similar situations in anime. However, things are not really good. There is still the corruption and greed of the human mind, even in the face of extinction. Though, that seems to be a favorite thing among dystopian shows in general. Humans just kind of suck and are always going to be jackasses when it comes right down to it. Even if it means their extinction.
So overall this anime is a good anime. There are other smaller things that make it good as well. The story is nicely paced, again the side bits do not overpower the regular story. The show does not pull its punches when it comes to some pretty messed up stuff at times. Even better it ends in a place where the anime can pick back up at any time and start up again. Really you do not see many anime that does that kind of thing. This one is definitely worth picking up in the future. I really hope there is a second season.
