How to Succeed Instructions
So, the question becomes what can possibly be good about an anime that is about... you know fan service. So I have to stretch and check everything... I mean the plot is interesting that is for sure. I mean it is not anything spectacular and original, but it is.. uhhh very Japanese... However, in my mind that is not really enough for me to elaborate on. However, this anime has the same trait that most athletic anime have, the trait of never giving up.
To be honest, this anime is one of the sports anime that I have seen where the main character has not been doing whatever the sport is for... well her entire life. Sakura is a super hot pop idol that is what she is. She has never stepped into a wrestling ring before. This is where most sports anime is fairly... I guess contradictory. In most sports anime the main character has been doing whatever sport for all their life and now they are finally in school where they can actually play with a team. You know they are the random hidden wringer that everyone wants on their team. Not Sakura, she just let her ego get in the way of her common sense. As a result she had to give up her career, one that was very well established.... I mean she could have done the idol thing till she was 30 at least, and started up a new one on a bet really. That is one thing that separates this anime from the rest of the sports anime. The main character has to start at level 1 with her... well life in that sport.
Which is where the overall message of never giving up REALLY... I guess shines in this anime. While the whole obsessed never say die character personality is always a part of the main character in a sports anime. IN this one it paid rather high dividends. Unlike most sports anime the coach can see that the main character has some kind of talent and does not really shun that player. Instead that player is given many chances to prove him, or herself. True that character has to work a bit at it. However, those characters are unrefined. As where with Sakura she just kind of showed up. I mean, yeah towards the end they all say she has some incredible latent talent. However, that does not start to show until she has actually entered into the world of wrestling and had to try and fail a great deal. Plus Sakura fails a lot more than most of these other players.
In most sports anime you know the main character who is supposed to emerge as an ace or whatever he or she generally has one... maybe two setbacks. Sakrua is basically one gigantic pile of fail. She fails a great deal more than she ever succeeds in the anime. Which goes to show just how motivating the anime can be. True enough, these are fictional characters. However, the way her career grew from nothing mimics the way that most humans through out time careers have grown. They might have always had an interest in their subject, however, they have to spend months or years eventually maybe figuring out the basics and failing all the freaking time. Just like Sakura, so you really see the strife that is caused by learning a new trade and what it takes to succeed.
So yeah, once you get past the skimpy costumes and super perfect females, who despite their muscular size still have perfect boob sizes. You can see that the story is at least something new to check out. After all, I cannot think of many other sports anime where the main character does not have some kind of history with the sport, willing or otherwise. Which gives the anime a good plot to build on and a lot of places to go with the story. Then there is the "Never say die" message that the anime gives off. Unlike most anime where the main character is going to eventually be the ace. This anime you actually see the main character doing what real aces and geniuses do. She starts with nothing and just sort of suffers through the entire anime only to really only come out as mediocre at the end. Sort of a bright path or future ahead of her. Man I am getting better at BSing.. normally a review like this would be much shorter.
