A Well-Written Spinoff
If there was on thing that really stood out among all the fanservice モエ bullshit it was the fact that this anime had its own setting and plot. To be honest that is all I really want to see in a lot of animes, a good setting and plot. A good set of characters, even if the main stars are cliché, and something that will keep me entertained. While this anime kind of clashes with itself as I covered in a different review, it is still worth at least one watch through. If just for the interesting interaction of the characters.
This anime follows standard magical girl duo groups. You have two females, who are polar opposites of each other. On the one side, we have the Pure heart Illya, who is shiny and bright and optimistic. On the other side we have Miyu who is very realistic and does not have many social skills. This is the story of how Miyu meets Illya and how they fall into innocent Yuri love. Personally my favorite part of the anime is how their different personalities effect the powers that they have. That was something new, for me anyway. Normally you have two girls and the only thing that really changes is how they are dressed. Not this anime, you have two girls who develop different powers because they are so different in their way of thinking. Well it is really just one power, but at the end of the day that is all that really matters. With this kind of thing you can make a story that stands on its own.
THat is one of the major things about this anime. The show stands on its own two feet and can really make you see how awesome a good writer can be. True enough they take stuff from the Fate universe and put it in here. However, that stuff is more or less mentioned in passing and does not really play much into the world that they are trying to create in this anime. Which can make the anime even better. Often times with animes like these the author just likes to take the characters and dress them sexy and cash in on all the crazy fans. I was happy to see that this time around the anime director took his work seriously and made the anime a universe on its own. Best to go for an investment and requests for more episodes than a few cheap figure sales on an anime that was poorly conceived to begin with. I feel that this anime has a good mix of the origin universe and the new one.
It really shows very well in the characters who come directly from the old universe. Well not Illya, but that is besides the point. I am talking about Rin and Luviagelita, they both retain everything that they were in the old series. Along with all the cameos that the other characters make. All of the cards play the role similar to what they were in Fate/Stay night. Which is not something that you really get to see in many animes these days. Most of the time the characters are all rewritten. Which is not really good for a spin-off that plays on novelty.
So I guess all in all this is an anime that is worth watching at least once. If just to say that you have seen the anime and want to brag a bit of about your fandom. The anime has a solid story, solid characters, and brings over the rest of the universe in just the perfect proportion that it makes the universe still there but not. That is probably the best characteristic. So this anime is definitely worth taking a look at. I am sure most of you can get over the middle schoolers dressed like sexy heroes any day of the week because that is easy. Just make sure that people do not find you watching certain episodes. That might cause a bit of trouble. I have heard that the OVA is particularly bad to be watched around people who are not attuned to anime. That is what I have heard, I am still waiting on a legitimate translation. Not that such a thing might ever come at this stage in the game. Oh well, anyway, this anime is still pretty good regardless... ok I think I am repeating myself to fill up space.. yeah that is what I am doing and I will stop now.
