Change Can Be Good
This will be one of my toughest challenges to date. How to find something good with this anime. So, if I step back and pretend I did not hate this anime. Mind you I probably need to drink heavily and have a girlfriend to really be able to do this, but then I could not write this review. It is a conundrum. Yes it is always a conundrum.
So as far as the anime itself goes it is a good example of good writing, in small doses. The introduction episode and the ending episode were very well written. So if you want to learn how to write a tournament into your anime, that is not meant to pad out the series, then you should watch the first and last episode. A good watch will show you how to properly watch this series.
Another great aspect is that you can learn how to write a truly episodic anime from this one as well. The majority of the events in this entire show are pretty pointless. They serve no real purpose other than to be there. You are given a good lesson in telling lots of short stories. How to feature characters and how to go through your whole cast. So in that aspect I give it a thumbs up as well.
I will also give out a few points for believability of the story. On occasion it is great to have an anime that is pretty close to earth. The anime itself is very believable at times. Even the super powers could be seen as real life abilities. You know accomplished through smoke and mirrors. To a very small degree though. The fact that it is not set in Japan always makes the series interesting as well. It gives you are pretty good insight into how the Japanese can view those of us in the west. This anime does a pretty good job of breaking away from standard Japanese culture. Coupled with the fact that there is no way we can really know how 18th century Italians lived. It is a nice change of pace. As where a lot of anime sets the anime in another location, but keeps it nice and Japanese. So that is a nice change of pace as well.
Speaking of change of pace as well, it has been a while since I have seen a reverse Harem. Reverse from what I, a straight male, would call a harem. All I can say is that it is really different seeing how the story is woven and what rules might change between the two situations. So it was definitely a different experience to see that as well. A new one, a good one a change of pace. You get to see how the anime fan girl gets off
I am also pretty happy with the fact that there is very little fan service in this anime. Fan service is one of those things that really gets in the way of a good show. This is the reason why I cannot watch Strike Witches. The fact that I cannot recall any fan service is a good thing, in my eyes. I do not have to pray and hope that someone looks over my shoulder at exactly the wrong moment. Plus all the outfits for the very few girls are not service at all. It is kind of weird, but you would not stand out wearing that in a crowd. Which leaves plenty of time to go Yaoi and give me nightmares.
So all in all, I have to say that this anime is a nice change of pace. This anime has a lot of potential, and to be honest I am not sure why or even how it was wasted. I really hope that this anime is not based on any manga or game or anything. Well regardless this one is bearable because you get a nice change of pace from your typical fan fapping animes that are out there.
